From the figures above it would appear that we have a large number of people over seventy five but this would be mainly due to the fact that a lot of these are in permanent residence in the local hospital.

Based on the data above there was an increase of 9% in the population from 1981 to 1996 and an increase of 15.9% from 1996 to 2002.

Considering the town's location only 38 miles from Dublin city centre it is probably one of the few towns close to the city that has not seen its population increase dramatically in recent years.

Up until recently the only type of private housing development taking place in the area was people building on quarter or half acre sites on the outskirts of town or further out in the country and this has obviously kept the population down. The local authority has built two large housing estates and two private housing estates have also been built but this hasn't seemed to affect the population trends in any obvious way. Baltinglass has been classified as a "primary growth centre " in the County Development Plan. Consequently with the trend towards denser development the population is set to increase dramatically. At present there are planning applications with Wicklow County Council for approximately another 500 houses so it can be seen that major changes in the population are about to happen. Baltinglass is probably unique that given its potential as a dormitory town that a population explosion has not happened sooner.

Even though it is a very rural area only a small number are employed in agriculture.

Table 4 gives a breakdown of the types of employment.
