Conflicts and Differences Operating in the Community

What conflicts and differences operate within the community?

This question asked of The Baltinglass Women's Group, The Park Committee, The Parent & Toddler Group and other individuals.

There are some differences between 'locals' and 'blow ins'. The locals have often commented how it has taken new people to come in and make positive changes. However there is some negative feeling between the two groups.

There has been some negative experience in the town between the travelling community and the settled community. This has caused unresolved anxiety and conflict.

There has been an 'anti-Dubs' attitude from the locals toward those moved here from Dublin.

There is no communication between the publicans. They work independently of each other with no community rapport between them.

There are many community groups doing good work for the community however they worked in isolation, each group doing its own thing with little communication between them. However this is improving. Jack Gibb talks about the four needs of a group - acceptance, sharing information and concerns, setting goals and organising for action. We have encouraged this and seen groups begin to communicate with each other.

New groups threaten some of the longer running community groups. Particularly regarding fundraising.
